Thanks to this posting on the Jabber AU forums I’ve found out you can insert a link like this:

<IMG SRC="http://rhinosw.com/tools/jabber/chris@jabber.org.au/status.gif">

to show whether or not you’re online on the Jabber Instant Messaging system.

So, for what it’s worth, I’ve added to the sidebar on the left.
