Fortunately the PHP folks <a href="http://cvs.php.net/viewvc.cgi/ZendEngine2/zend_alloc.c?r1=1.144.2.3.2.19&r2=1.144.2.3.2.20&pathrev=PHP_5_2&view=patch" rel="nofollow">have a fix in SVN</a> and there is now a <a href="http://ftp.cyconet.org/debian/archive/bpo/php5/5.2.0-7~bpo.2~testing.1/" rel="nofollow">set of testing packages</a> with this fix committed which I'm now running here - and the problem seems to have gone away.
