Twitter Weekly Updates for 2011-04-24

Posted on April 24, 2011 by Chris Samuel
  • Some fabulous long exposure photos from 1992-1994 http://tinyurl.com/3chuldz via @theretronaut #
  • Reported problem with @Panasas 4.0.1 to #SGI a process can hang removing same directory tree on multiple clients 🙁 #
  • In our case this happens when #Torque pbs_mom's clean up a jobs temporary directory which is on a @Panasas filesystem #
  • Just got a free 508MB upgrade to my VM that runs @donna_williams and my web and email servers, thanks @rimuhosting! 🙂 #
  • Debian CDs on ancient quad PentiumPro: Squeeze locks up before syslinux menu, Lenny panics booting kernel, next is Sarge #
  • Er, that would be Etch next, not Sarge – not that desperate yet! 🙂 #
  • Sigh, it appears that there is no @Debian CD archive for older releases in Australia, not even at @Internode 🙁 #
  • Yay! @Debian Etch install kernel doesn't panic on boot like Lenny one does! Squeeze CD locks up *before* booting kernel.. #
  • Success! @Debian Etch installed and booted on my ancient Olivetti Netstrada quad processor Pentium Pro box! 🙂 #
  • A PDP-11 emulator – written in #Javascript and running in your web browser – http://pdp11.aiju.de/ 🙂 #pdp11 #
  • The javascript that does the emulation of the #PDP11 is here – http://pdp11.aiju.de/pdp11.js #
  • Core of the 1999 new train control system for Melbourne (Metrol) consisted of 14 PDP-11's – http://bit.ly/e9HgkI (page 2) #
  • My brain is fried… #
  • Right, time to go home, have a good Easter all! 🙂 #
  • Upgraded my #PPro box to Squeeze as Lenny kernel panics, but unfortunately it hangs very early with no diagnostics.. 🙁 #
  • Now booting Squeeze with Etch kernel results in non-functioning networking.. :-/ #
  • Non-functional networking in Squeeze fixed by manual "dhclient eth0" – if only booting a newer kernel were that easy! #
  • Even my own 2.6.38.3 kernel (starting from an allnoconfig) won't boot on my PPro box; hangs after "Booting the kernel" #
  • Just retweeted @TimHetherington's last tweet, poignant. RIP him and @ChrisHondros #
  • Sigh, exactly the same lockup with #Linux 2.6.39-rc4 at the "Booting the kernel." message.. 🙁 #
  • US citizen and interested in how much the govt wants to know about you ? Read this: http://is.gd/bkzaF5 via @ioerror #
  • Getting desperate with booting a recent #Linux kernel on this Pentium Pro box, currently compiling an "allnoconfig" test #
  • OK, so even an "allnoconfig" #Linux kernel for i386 and verbose debug/boot messages hangs after "Booting the kernel." 🙁 #
  • I've thrown myself on the tender mercies of the x86 architecture maintainers and LKML re: PPro hang http://bit.ly/hOVqAz #
  • Storing live data from heart monitors on the Amazon #cloud – what could possibly go wrong ? http://bit.ly/hJpsGw #
  • Thomas Meyer may have found problem with modern Linux kernels on my PPro box, kernel overwrites the registers it uses! #
  • viz: bios seems to report size in AX/BX. code in
memory.c move return sizes from CX/DX into AX/BX, when
CX or DX not zero #
