Twitter Weekly Updates for 2010-11-28

Posted on November 28, 2010 by Chris Samuel
  • Yay, business class upgrade confirmed to the UK for tonight! 🙂 #qf94 #qantas #
  • #RIP Prof. Frank Fenner, Australian scientist who announced eradication of smallpox at UN in 1980 #science #
  • I hate bugs that glibc free() reports but don't show up under valgrind or debugging malloc's like dmalloc. #
  • Landed in Melbourne, back in Oz at last! #
  • Wah, hwloc 1.1rc3 "make check" fails on SLES10SP1 PPC64 with "free(): invalid next size (fast)", works everywhere else! #
  • But if I try with valgrind or dmalloc to try and track down what's happening it works! Wonder if it's a glibc bug? #
  • My "free(): invalid next size (fast)" issue is getting weirder, it doesn't happen if I build it with -m64 🙁 #
  • Interesting, #NBN plans on (eventually) having its own satellites for broadband delivery outside of fibre+wifi areas. #
  • Pah, Valgrind did find that error in #hwloc on PPC, just was buried in heaps of warnings about unsupported syscalls! 🙁 #
  • Yay! Can duplicate SLES/PPC #hwloc 1.1rc3 failure on Ubuntu/x64: install libnuma-dev and run MALLOC_CHECK_=3 make check #
  • .@774melbourne has severe thunderstorm warning for #Melbourne but #BOM only has a warning for central area, who to trust? #
  • Cool, the #hwloc bug was down to 2nd and 3rd arguments to memset() being swapped, devs are now patching it! #
  • #hwloc bug was in code only enabled if configure found libnuma's migrate_pages() function, hence nobody else had hit it #
  • So much for these thunderstorms that ABC Melbourne was warning about, only had a brief shower of rain here.. 🙁 #
  • Over 10,000 attendees at #SC10 including record number of technical programme people, pretty amazing given economy! #
  • Fabulous photo of a Powerful Owl chick on the @abcnews website – http://bit.ly/fOEaPo #
  • Stuck on @metrotrains Xstrata train at UFG, driver made some announcement but PA stuffed, nothing on website.. 🙁 #
  • Apparently a police operation up the line according to schoolkids, good to get some idea! #
  • Finally an understandble PA announcement. Train line reopened. Phew. #
  • S. Korean defence minister resigned for not taking actions that could have triggered war – hopefully next will be same! #
  • Note to S. Korean govt critics of ex-defence minister – defence != offence #
  • Dear @abcnews – people go to the ABC news website to read about news, not sport, so why are the #ashes the main headline ? #
  • So #unimelb is moving all student email to @google – hopefully they'll do the same for staff too! #
  • No @Google Apps shinyness for #UniMelb staff, ITS say: "No, staff are migrating to the new exchange server." #pain 🙁 #
  • #BOM has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for east & north of Melbourne – http://bit.ly/h0LlVF #
  • Colleagues partner called in to say that their front room is flooded in Eltham #thunderstorm #melbourne #
  • Off to vote, had to solve Ubuntu bug #471738 to be able to print how-to-vote card customised with @belowtheline_au website #
  • Note to self: next time I use @belowtheline_au double check which electorate I'm in, otherwise I'll have to wing it again! #
  • Oh noes, my ancient Toshiba Libretto 70CT seems to have had a hard disk failure – uptime was over a year! 🙁 #
  • It plays all sorts of sad sounds through its internal speaker when you power it on, won't get past the POST.. 🙁 #
  • "Insert system in drive. Press any key when ready…." #GameOver #
  • BBC report on Christopher Hitchens debating Tony Blair on "Religion is a force for good in the world" http://bbc.in/fs1rAd #
  • Good (hype-free) FAQ by F-Secure on #Stuxnet – http://bit.ly/i5SbY9 #
  • ABC says Monbulk electorate "has the state's highest proportion of residents who stated they had no religion (13.0%)" 🙂 #
  • NYT reporter goes through "enhanced pat-down" 8 times in 1 day, each time they miss her pockets. http://nyti.ms/hw5IuU #
  • Developer (debuggin) build of #KDE Plasma Mobile on #MeeGo with QML (YouTube video) http://bit.ly/fyUJtt #
  • ABC predicts that Nationals will get 10 seats with 6% of the vote and Greens will get 0 seats with 10% of the vote, er.. #
  • So why is the Australian threatening the person who reported the comments, not the person who made them? #twitdef #
  • The spoof reviews of this ridiculously priced HDMI cable from Best Buy are total win! 🙂 http://bit.ly/epP6Gq #
  • D'oh, forgot to credit @jeremyvisser and @markjaquith for the pointer to those spoof reviews of the HDMI cable. #
