This section now obsolete!

This was written in 2003 – I’ve since migrated from the Post-Nuke install to WordPress so it’s just here for posterity now.

Rather than role my own “content management system” (CMS) in PHP I decided to use Post-Nuke, a highly capable CMS with lots of useful features.

So that new system is up and running over here!

As a result I won’t be updating this part any more, I’ll be trying to migrate content over to Post-Nuke as an when I have time.

Open Source Windows ?

Here’s an interesting story, what happens when the philosophy that brought you Linux, *BSD, Apache, etc, starts to set its sights on reworking that software which comes from Redmond ?

ReactOS, that’s what!

These strange people have decided that it would be a wizard wheeze to create a Windows NT 4 compatible operating system, including device driver compatability.

Now, to be fair, they’ve got a long way to go, but the initial reports on their website look promising, it can already self-host (i.e. you can compile ReactOS under ReactOS using GCC) but the screenshots don’t show it looking like an NT gui (a lot to do before then I suspect).

Interestingly if you use Windows you can download a copy of Bochs, the freeware x86 emulator with a ready setup version of ReactOS from the downloads section of the ReactOS website.

Linux users will need to download Bochs separately and use the
ReactOS images
that are available.

New system for a new beginning

I decided, after much playing around with trying to write my own, to try out Post-Nuke, a free “Content Management System” written in PHP. I’m fairly impressed by its features, and so I’ve decided to switch over to using it for a trial.

I’ve left the old pages around until I’ve migrated all the content into Post-Nuke. That’ll probably be a little while yet as I’ve got a lot of projects on the go and some travelling in between!

Feel free to register and leave comments about what you think of the new site, and vote in the poll as well.

Thanks!

Greetings from Australia

Well we made it. We’ve been in Australia for some time now but only just really got the opportunity and access to be able to add anything to the log!

We’re at the inaugral World Autism Congress in Melbourne and having a good time. Donna spoke this morning both online at 8am and then at the plenary session, followed by a questions session later on. Donna seemed to enjoy herself and the fact that her old teacher met us there was nice too. Donna made him stand up when she thanked him for his help!

The organisers have got an organisation called ComputerBank to set up a small network of customised Debian Linux systems so that people on the Autistic Spectrum anywhere in the world can communicate with people at the conference – a really great idea from some really nice people (Hi Grant!). People seem to be working quite happily with them!

Anyway, we need to get back to the Congress as Donna will be on a panel at 3:30pm here.

The final week..

Crumbs, it’s been a busy week so far, and it’s only Wednesday! Finished work last Friday, then we were straight into the last mad dash to get the house ready for when we leave.

There have been builders, gardeners, plumbers and electricians, and usually all at the same time! We’ve also been packing our luggage away ready for the trip to Heathrow and the flight to Oz! Also lots of visitors, with our many friends and my family visiting us to say goodbye. Oh, and lots of free meals too. (You know who you are). 🙂

But there’s also been thinking time, when we’ve just been sat around waiting for visitors, and it’s in those quiet times that we’ve been able to sit and think about what’s about to happen, and what we’re going to do. Donna really wants to do performing arts and I’m looking at a variety of jobs that interest me, one of which could be part time Linux networking work which would allow me to start having a go at developing some software. I’ve wanted to do that for a while, but never really had the time to get anything going.

Contact Page Fixed

Oops.. got a bit overenthusiastic with my .htaccess controls on the directory with the contact form script in, which resulted in no-one being able to contact me..

Fixed now! (Actually fixed earlier this week, but been too busy with emigrating things to be able to write about it)

An (almost) empty house..

Well the shipping people have taken all our boxes away that we’ve been packing up over the past few weeks, leaving a very empty house and a real feeling that this is it – we are leaving the UK.

Yesterday we were feeling a bit lost amongst all the space, but we’re starting to get used to it now. I think the real shock will come once I’ve finished work and we’ve got a whole week to ourselves before it’s time to leave. But the main feeling is excitement!

But, before that happens, I’ve got my work to wrap up, so it’s back to the grindstone for another week. 🙂
